A 4-day itinerary is generally recommended:

The best times to visit are from March to June and September to November when the temperatures are comfortable. However, during peak seasons, there might be queues for the cable cars, so it is advisable to book in advance. If you're interested in seeing Zhangjiajie in winter, that's an option too, although some budget hotels may lack adequate heating.
Zhangjiajie's cuisine is predominantly salty and spicy. Some of the local specialties you can try include Sanxia Guo, Tujia Steamed Pork, Teppanyaki, Cold Noodles, Sour Fish, Mudfish Tofu, Black Chicken and Gastrodia Soup, Xiangxi Smoked Bacon and Sausage, and Chestnut Chicken. Yes, Zhangjiajie is very suitable for family travel. Most of the ascents are accessible via cable cars and elevators, and there are eco-friendly shuttles between major attractions. As long as you avoid too much hiking, it should be comfortable for both elderly and children.
