January brings extreme cold to Inner Mongolia. Its vast size causes a big temperature difference between the east and west, so you need to pick clothes based on where you go. Eastern Inner Mongolia is extremely cold and dry (down to -35℃): wear layered clothes—fleece-lined thermal underwear, a thick sweater/fleece jacket, and an over-the-knee down jacket. Add waterproof non-slip snow boots, an ear-covering hat, waterproof gloves and a scarf to keep cold out. Central-Western and Western Inner Mongolia is mildest (-19℃ to 7℃): regular thermals, a lightweight down jacket/thick jacket, fleece-lined pants, fleece-lined leather shoes and thin gloves—warm but not bulky for outings.
The month of January in Inner Mongolia showcases various experiences due to temperature shifts and natural environments: Eastern Inner Mongolia hosts Hulunbuir which stands as one of China's coldest areas reaching -35°C while offering visitors an ice world with frozen Hulun Lake and Genhe's "Cold Pole Village" that serves ice-table hot pot and the Aoluguya Reindeer Tribe and Manzhouli on the Sino-Russian border; The Central Inner Mongolia region of Xilingol League maintains a temperature around 0°C with snow-covered steppes that host Ice Nadam festivals featuring horse racing and snow wrestling as well as starry quiet nights and ski slopes without excessive crowds; The Western Inner Mongolia areas of Alxa League and Wuhai experience desert-snow phenomena with Alxa's pink Wulan Lake and Wuhai's snow desert-lake vistas and the enigmatic snow-topped Ulanhad Volcano Group.
