What to Wear in Inner Mongolia in January?

January brings extreme cold to Inner Mongolia. Its vast size causes a big temperature difference between the east and west, so you need to pick clothes based on where you go. Eastern Inner Mongolia is extremely cold and dry (down to -35℃): wear layered clothes—fleece-lined thermal underwear, a thick sweater/fleece jacket, and an over-the-knee down jacket. Add waterproof non-slip snow boots, an ear-covering hat, waterproof gloves and a scarf to keep cold out. Central-Western and Western Inner Mongolia is mildest (-19℃ to 7℃): regular thermals, a lightweight down jacket/thick jacket, fleece-lined pants, fleece-lined leather shoes and thin gloves—warm but not bulky for outings.
