For the students, nothing is more exciting than getting their hands dirty. This community service program will take the students to a remote Miao village in Guizhou Province. They will live in local people’s houses and help the villagers to build their fish ponds or terraced rice fields. This is the best way to experience minority people’s life in remote China.
Day 01: Arrival (L, D)
Arrive at Guiyang airport in the morning, an early lunch will be served at the airport. Jump on the bus and drive 3 hours to a small town named Kaili. Upon your arrival, get off the bus and prepare for a 2-3 hour hiking tour. The off-the-beaten-path hike tour will take you through the terraced rice fields and some ethnic minority Miao villages. Have a bird’s eye view of the villages from the top of the fields; you will be amazed by the ancient architecture of Chinese minority tribes.
Arrive at the local village around 6:30pm. A Welcome ceremony will be prepared by the Miao people. Enjoy the welcome dinner in the Chief’s house and walk around the village to find your host family.
Day 02: Community Service and Handwork (B, L, D)
Get up in the early morning and prepare your breakfast together with your host. After breakfast, walk to the fields and learn from the villagers how to build a fish pond. The process may include: digging the fields, moving the dirt aside, making the hole, building the wall for retaining the water, mixing the sand and cement, cementing the wall to make it water proof, hammering the dirt, and filling the pond.
After dinner, learn from the villagers how to make a Lusheng, which is a traditional musical instrument of the Miao people. The Lusheng has a history of more than 3,000 years. You can make your own Lusheng and keep it as a souvenir after the learning experience.
Day 03: Community Service and School Visit (B, L, D)
Today, continue your work to build the fish pond with the villagers in the morning. The work today is quite similar to yesterday. The main job today is to make the wall water proof. After you finish the job, your reward is to go and catch fish in the rice paddy fields or plough the fields like Chinese people did thousands of years ago. The villagers are raising small fish in their rice paddy fields. Try everything you can to catch a fish and you can prepare it for dinner.
After lunch, you will visit a primary school in the village. You can do some cultural exchange programs with the local students. Prepare some gifts, just in case you meet some good friends there.
Tonight, the Chief will prepare a long table banquet for you. It’s the most traditional banquet in the Miao people’s village. After the banquet, enjoy the bonfire party with the villagers.
Day 04: Departure (B)
Say goodbye to your hospitable host family and transfer to the Guiyang airport.
Add one more day: You can add one more day to see a waterfall in Guizhou. The Huangguoshu Waterfall is about 77 meters high and 101 meters wide. It’s the biggest waterfall in China. It’s about 2-hour drive from Guiyang city.
