What to wear and bring in Nanjing in June?

Early June

Early June in Nanjing has temperatures from 16°C to 34°C, with rainy days (like moderate rain on June 1 and light rain on June 2) and some fog. Wear short-sleeve shirts or thin long-sleeve tops during the day; add a light jacket for cooler mornings (around 16-18°C). Choose lightweight pants or casual shorts for the lower body. Bring waterproof shoes and a foldable umbrella for rain. Since air quality is mostly excellent (AQI 27-80), no masks are usually needed. Keep a small bag handy to hold your umbrella and jacket when the weather warms up.

Mid June

In mid-June, Nanjing gets hotter. The high can hit 35°C, and the low is usually 20°C to 25°C. There are sunny or cloudy days, and sometimes thunder showers come. You should wear summer clothes—short-sleeved T-shirts and loose pants are good examples. Light-colored clothes are better because they keep you cooler. An umbrella is needed every day, and waterproof shoe covers work on rainy days. You may feel stuffy because of high humidity, but a small fan helps. Don’t forget sunscreen, a sun hat and sunglasses; the sun is strong when it’s sunny.

Late June

Nanjing is hot and humid in late June. The high temperature is around 30°C to 35°C, and the low is about 20°C to 26°C. Sometimes there are heavy rains or thunder showers. Light, sweat-absorbent clothes—like short-sleeved T-shirts and shorts—are what you can wear. A thin raincoat is good to keep, since sudden heavy rain may come. When it’s not raining, you still need sunscreen and a sun hat. Bring extra clothes, because you may get wet in the rain and need to change. You need comfortable shoes, and waterproof ones are better on rainy days. You can also take a small water bottle to drink more and stay hydrated.

Touring Nanjing in June

In June, you can visit Zhongshan Mountain National Park—the trees there give thick shade to keep you cool. You can also go to Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, which is free, to honor the great man. The Nanjing Cultural Tourism Festival happens this time; it has things like trendy markets and cultural shows. Free tickets are offered to college and senior high school entrance exam takers at some scenic spots. For food, don’t skip the beef potstickers at Liji Halal Restaurant. Try the sweet plum cakes too, to taste Jinling’s flavor (Jinling is Nanjing’s old name).
