During traditional festivals, Jin merchants far from home expressed their yearning for hometown and relatives by listening to hometown dialects and watching traditional hometown shows.

Provincial Intangible Cultural Heritage Craft

Pingyao Polished Lacquerware Craft

Pingyao Polished Lacquerware Craft is part of Shanxi's old craft traditions. Its main steps are polishing by hand and putting on many coats of natural lacquer. Workers pick wooden bases. They stick cloth to the base and scrape ash mixed with brick powder. They put on thirty or more coats of natural lacquer. Workers dip their palms in sesame oil. They rub the surface by hand until it shines like a mirror. Common designs show mountains, water, flowers, or birds. Colors are deep but not loud. Finished pieces shine like a mirror. The lacquer can stand up to acids, bases, and rubbing. These things are both useful tools and beautiful art. It became a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. This craft clearly shows Shanxi's skill in lacquer work.

Fenjiu Making Craft

Fenjiu Making Craft from Xinghuacun is a national treasure craft of Shanxi. Its history is very old - 4,000 years back. People passed this craft down over many dynasties. It improved over time. In Northern Qi times, "Fen Qing" wine was well-known. During Ming and Qing periods, it became popular all over China. This happened because its methods were advanced, quality was top, and it served as wine for emperors. Shanxi traders helped spread it, changing drinking traditions in other areas.

Workers follow a special method from Jinzhong Plain called "Double-Steam Double-Ferment". This method makes Fenjiu. The liquid looks clear. It smells fresh and pleasant. The taste is sweet and smooth. It feels rich but also clean and crisp.

Shanxi Aged Vinegar Traditional Craft

Shanxi Aged Vinegar Traditional Craft uses sorghum as main material. It follows five steps: steam, ferment, smoke-cure, drip-filter, and age. Workers steam grains first. Then add starter for fermentation. Smoke-curing increases aroma. They drip-filter vinegar liquid. Finally, age it for years.

Workers control temperature and humidity carefully. Natural microbes ferment the mixture. The final vinegar shows dark purple color. Its sour taste feels deep and mellow. It contains rich amino acids. This craft joined China's first National Intangible Heritage list in 2006. It represents living traditions of Chinese vinegar-making.

What to Wear in Each Season

Spring

Spring in Shanxi brings dusty sand storms. Dress warmly early on. You need warm under clothes under a wool sweater. Wear a jacket that blocks wind too. Pair these with jeans and boots good for wet hikes. Use these to walk muddy paths safely. Protect your eyes with goggles. Wrap a scarf around your face. This keeps swirling dust out.

Temperatures rise near late May. Switch to light fleece tops. Wear them over long-sleeve shirts. Choose pants that can turn into shorts. Pick shoes good for trails. Always carry a windbreaker that folds small. Put it in your bag. Why? Because cold hits fast sometimes. Temperatures can drop 15 degrees quickly.

Summer

Shanxi summers are hot and wet. Wear fast-dry T-shirts and light linen pants. Or choose shorts to your knees. Walk on slippery flood streets carefully. Use strong sandals for this. July rains pour down 135mm water. Always carry a small rain jacket. You really need this. Sun rays get very strong here. UV levels hit 11. Protect yourself daily. Wear hats with wide edges. Use sunglasses marked UV400. Put on sunscreen SPF 50+. Carry a small hand fan too. It helps fight thick wet air. Humidity hits 85% in busy vinegar places.

Autumn

Fall in Shanxi has changing temperatures. Dress like local people do. Wear flannel shirts under fleece vests. Add strong jeans and boots above your ankles. This works for foggy walks in Wutai Mountain. Mornings there get cold, down to 5°C. Bring a silk scarf too. It keeps your neck warm. It also blocks sand when wind blows strong in afternoons. Pack a short down jacket for mountain visits. Bring warm leg covers for late November. Hike Taihang Canyon then. See golden maple views. Dressing in layers pays off here.

Winter

Fight Shanxi's sharp cold. Wear a 600-fill down coat wrapping thermal base layers and wool sweaters. Put windproof ski pants over leggings for warmth. Wear boots with fur inside stepping on icy roads. Frostbite can happen in just 10 minutes at -20°C on skin left bare. So you need fleece face covers, heavy gloves, and snow goggles. At temples, put long coats over everything. Inside coal museums, dark clothes hide dust stains found everywhere.

The Best Time to Visit Shanxi

If you want busy festivals, go in January or February. It is cold (-8°C to 3°C) but fun. Pingyao has New Year street parties. Taiyuan's Jinci Temple fair has iron-fire shows. Or try May for nicer weather (13–27°C). See Jin Merchant culture shows in Qixian. Watch Northern Wei costume walks in Datong.

If you like quiet nature trips, pick late September to October. Enjoy Shanxi's pretty autumn (6–25°C). Air is dry but pleasant. Wutai Mountain has misty tops. Taihang Canyon turns red with maple leaves. For calmer spring visits, choose April (7–22°C). See Hukou Waterfall's big "peach blossom floods". Walk Mianshan's flower cliffs with few people around.

Do not go in July or August. Heavy rains fall (135mm). Also skip December and January. It gets very cold (down to -26°C) and air gets dirty. For summer, see Datong's volcano hills instead. In winter, try indoor craft workshops like lacquer making.
