Highlights of Qiao Grand Courtyard

Central Courtyard

The Qiao Family Compund's core part is the Central Courtyard, which was constructed by Qiao Zhiyong, a rich merchant during the Qing Dynasty. Showcasing the traditional architectural style of northern China, it consists of six big courtyards and 313 rooms. There are wooden beams carved beautifully, along with brick and stone carvings. Because its layout reflects Confucian values, specific areas are divided for ancestral worship, business meetings, and family living. The "Three Carvings", that is, brick, wood, and stone carvings, illustrate folk tales and lucky patterns like "Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix".

Grand Theater
Grand TheaterGrand Theater

The Grand Theater is truly a precious part of the Qiao Family Compund. Operas used to be frequently put on here for the Qiao family and their acquaintances in the past. This wooden stage, which is well-kept, has nice paintings and carvings, showing the Qiao family's fondness for traditional Chinese opera. Today, visitors can watch Pingyao-style performances, from which they can get an idea of the entertainment in the Qing Dynasty. Since it has great acoustics and an impressive architectural style, the theater has become a favored place for taking photos.

Treasure Hall

The Qiao family's very precious collections, such as antique furniture, porcelain, calligraphy works, and historical documents, are housed in this museum. These collections show how successful the Qiao family was in business and what their rich lifestyle was like. Some important things are gold-plated crafts, silk clothes with embroidery, and rare coins from the Qing Dynasty. Also, these exhibits let people learn a lot about the culture of Shanxi merchants. The culture of Shanxi merchants is well-known because it had a big impact on banking and trade in ancient China.

Watchtower

The Watchtower is a strong building for defense. If you stand on it, you can see the whole Qiao Grand Courtyard and the countryside around it. They built it for safety and to show their importance. It has places for shooting arrows (arrow slits), spots for looking around (observation platforms), and an old alarm system. When visitors get to the top of the Watchtower, the symmetrical layout of the compound can be overlooked by them. The view is really wonderful and it completely shows the harmonious beauty in the idea of feng shui.
